John Burgers (1920 - 2003) Santa Cruz, CA
John Burgers [Doctor Dotter] has been an inspiration and creative force in our gallery for the last two years. John's work in Pointique artistically connected the public's interest in a most unconventional method using circular color patterns on metallic disks, magnets, pins, tiles, buttons, nobs, and paper art works. Although he would not claim these works to be mandalas as in the true Hindu or Tibetan tradition, they represented a certain meditation and contributed to the 'well being' of his later years. He was indefatigable in his development of the art form and pursued every avenue for the proliferation of Pointique. River Street Gallery maintains the "Pointique Universe" exhibit that premered hundreds of Pointiques in February of 2002. John also sold his work in the local Santa Cruz stores; Bead It, Gateway, and Made in Santa Cruz. As the inventor and master of the art form, he desired to teach others to continue the colorful patterning technique. His enthusiasm led him to develop a Pointique website on the internet and to envision a publication of "How to Pointique".
